So I listened and I watch the state of the union address, which was the first time, I have ever done this and well got all the way through it. If our TV received more than just CBS I would have changed the channel and yet I was too lazy to turn off the set for internet radio. I made use of the time and noted a few items from his speech that I feel you all who didn’t hear the speech should know.
President Bush certainly dumbed it down in the beginning for those that tuned in and left the more important pieces for those that fell asleep or ended up changing the channel. He kept with his mantra, that the economy is strong, were’ continuing to democratize Iraq and winning the war on terror. Actually the first 25 minutes of his speech was dedicated to freedom and terrorism (I guess this is the foreign policy area of the state of the union address). Bush used the word “terror”, “terrorism”, or “terrorist” 20 times and used the words “freedom”, “free” or “liberty” at least 27 times and he totally numbed my thought process into submission… and yes I have no life.
Some things I noted:
- He highlighted and defended his decision to start and continue with his “International” Spy program (domestic surveillance) and emphasized its benefits to … Freedom – well because “if there are people inside our country who are talking with al Qaeda, we want to know about it, because we will not sit back and wait to be hit again.“
- Encouraged congress to implement permanent tax cuts (…for the rich… again).
- He encouraged 140 programs to be cut from the budget which will save $14 Billion next year and put us on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009. WHAT! Maybe he’s doing the math from his no child left behind program but last I checked the US deficit is at $8.376 Trillion so I don’t know how saving 0.16% of that deficit this year will get us to half in 2 years?
*note much of my notes were lost in a freak coffee spill accident so you have half a post… just check the link to the transcript of the speech and this video of the address:
